Two other versions of Freeway were also released. The first, called Freeway Rabbit, was included in the "32 in 1" cartridge offered by Atari in Europe and Australia during the late 1980s. As the name suggests, you must help rabbits instead of chickens cross the road. Oddly enough, the original Freeway was also included in the "32 in 1" cartridge, only renamed as Freeway Chicken.

The second alternate release was actually the first version of Freeway to be programmed. Originally the game was going to be about people trying to get across. Anyone who didn't survive would become a bloody smear on the pavement. Activision eventually decided this was a little too morbid, so people were replaced with chickens. Decades later, the original prototype, dubbed Bloody Human Freeway, was featured in several Activision compilations for modern consoles and computers.
