Atari 2600 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Review

For something that's supposed to be the worst video game of all time, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is suprisingly playable. Yes, it's obviously rushed and unrefined. Yes, it's full of bugs. Yes, it's debatable whether a game based on E.T. should have been this complex in the first place. Maybe the game even deserves to be the flop that it became. Even so, buried under the thick layers of sloppy presentation and negative hype lies a more-than-half-decent adventure that will reward those who are patient enough to look for it. Does the reward make up for the time and effort it takes to get there? That's left as an exercise for the player.

No one can honestly say E.T. is a "great" game, or a game for the masses, especially in its official, bug-ridden state. But give it a chance, and maybe play an unofficial version that fixes the bugs, and you just might find yourself calling it a "good" game. Maybe.

Grade: B-.
