Apple II Frogger Review

It's something of a miracle that Frogger was released for the Apple II at all. When Parker Brothers initially entered the home video game market, they decided to release titles only for systems with support for game cartridges. This included the Commodore 64 and the Atari 8-bit home computers, but did not include the Apple II. Parker Brothers eventually would release some games on disk for the Apple II, but at the time of Frogger, Q*Bert and Popeye, they were a cartridge-only outfit. However, due to a quirk in how game licensing worked in the early 8-bit era, a company could secure permission to release a game on disk even after another company had obtained the cartridge rights. Sierra On-Line took advantage of this to bring Frogger to the Apple II.

This version certainly won't win any awards for appearances, but it does get the job done. The sound is predictably sparse and the pace is predictably lazy, but it earns major points for keeping all of the arcade's enemies, even the otters. Overall, a solid effort, and a pleasantly surprising addition to the Apple II game library.
