Atari 2600 Millipede Review

Atari 2600 Centipede was a pleasant and welcome surprise, proving the console really is capable of excellent arcade adaptations. Atari 2600 Millipede is more than that. It is a jaw-dropping gift from the video game gods. How Atari managed to preserve every character, every last bit of personality, and all of the frenzy of the arcade game, and cram it all into an Atari 2600 game with excellent graphics, surprisingly huge amounts of sound, and almost no flicker, is simply amazing. Of course there are some obvious compromises. The mushrooms still look like rectangles, and so do the flowers. Mushrooms still get poisoned only one complete row at a time. And... actually, that's it. Everything else is just like in the arcade, right down to the insect swarms, the multiple-spider attacks, the mushroom growth spurts, and even the "extra life" theme, now rendered perfectly! In short, this game is awesome, and one of the best reasons to own an Atari 2600.

Grade: A+.
