Commodore VIC-20 Q*bert Review

Over the years, many popular video games have been turned into portable LCD games, using the same technology found in calculators and digital watches. Because of the way LCD graphics are created, these conversions usually end up rather sparse, with very little animation and only a few ways the game's characters can appear on-screen. That's exactly what this version of Q*Bert feels like. Q*Bert and his enemies teleport from one pyramid block to the next, there is no movement except for those teleportations, and every character is always surrounded by a black border to separate them from the background graphics. This doesn't make the game unplayable, but it does make it very difficult to use strategies learned elsewhere.

The rest of the game survives mostly intact. Wrong-Way and Sam are in hiding, but the rest of the cast is here, including Ugg, who has traded his side-hopping ways for a more ordinary journey around the pyramid. Sound is average as far as VIC-20 games go, while game play is free from slowdowns, at least for the most part. While Q*Bert is better presented on every other system, including the Atari 2600, this version will do in a pinch.
