Nintendo Entertainment System Q*bert Review

Many NES ports of older arcade games have enhancements, extra features or changes that can freshen their appeal, but often distract from what made the games great in the first place. Q*bert is no exception, but thankfully the enhancements here do not change the game itself. They are kept mostly to the music, such as a new theme to introduce each level, and to the controls, which are customizable. The game itself survives mostly intact, and in fact this is the only home version to include both green enemies, Slick and Sam, and both sideways enemies, Ugg and Wrong-Way. What chips away from this port's potential perfection is a change in the arcade character patterns (Ugg and Wrong-Way appear one round earlier, for example), and a curious control style where Q*bert hesitates before each jump, especially when changing directions. The enemies also stagger their movements, so Q*bert is not at any disadvantage, but still it feels weird. Beyond that, the graphics are very well done, and the audio is decent, so the game offers good entertainment, at least once you get used to the controls.
