Apple II Zaxxon Review

This version of Zaxxon isn't bad at all. For Apple II, II+ and IIe owners, this is one of the few games that can be made even better with the addition of a Mockingboard sound card. Without the Mockingboard, sound is predictably minimal, with little more than tiny shots and explosions. Graphics on the other hand are very nicely detailed. The asteroids don't have the complex backgrounds they did in the arcade, but the player's ship and the enemy's weaponry look almost as good as they did originally, even when limited to just four colors. Scrolling and animation are choppy, and the game does experience some slow-down from time to time, but these are minor issues which do not distract from game play. Other home systems may be better equipped to offer games like Zaxxon, but this port is still very well done.
