How do you take a cultural phenomenon and make it even better? One way to do it is accidentally, and without permission. What started as a hack of the original Pac-Man code later turned into a full-fledged and yet completely unauthorized sequel to one of the hottest arcade games ever released. Despite those questionable beginnings, Ms. Pac-Man proved every bit as engaging and addictive as the original, and for good reason. Offering more than just some different graphics and sound, Ms. Pac-Man actually improved the game play as well, with multple mazes, bonus items that don't hold still, and most importantly, unpredictable behavior in the ghosts. The result was an instant success, and fortunately one that did not get mired in the legalities of its origins. Once everyone agreed Pac-Man developer Namco should have full rights to Ms. Pac-Man, the game kept its place in the history books, and in arcades everywhere for many years to come.
